Mola mola (ocean sunfish) at cleaning station near Nusa Penida, a rare pelagic encounter at the current-swept dive sites of this region

Nusa Penida Sental Dive Site

Bali, Indonesia · Near Nusa Penida

Reef Beginner 5–18m Mild Year-round

Sental is a reef dive on the north coast of Nusa Penida, east of Toyapakeh. A gentle coral slope with scattered bommies and sandy patches extends from the shallows to about 18 metres. The site is known for its reliable turtle encounters and a healthy reef that sits in relatively sheltered water.

Sental doesn't make headlines or Instagram reels. It's a solid, dependable reef dive with consistently good marine life and easy conditions. Operators use it as a gentle first dive of the day before heading to more challenging sites, or as a standalone dive when conditions elsewhere are unfavourable.

The turtle population here is one of the densest on Nusa Penida. Multiple green and hawksbill turtles feed and rest on the reef throughout the day, seemingly unbothered by divers.

Green and hawksbill turtles are the highlight — expect multiple sightings per dive. The turtles rest on coral heads, feed on sponges, and visit cleaning stations where banner fish pick parasites from their shells.

The reef supports healthy hard coral coverage with schools of anthias, fusiliers, and damselfish. Larger residents include Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish (occasionally), and groupers at cleaning stations. The sandy areas have blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels.

Macro life includes nudibranchs, flatworms, and the occasional leaf scorpionfish on the bommies. Not a macro destination, but enough to keep a dive interesting between turtle encounters.

Easy, sheltered conditions. Mild current or none. Boat entry from a short ride along the north coast. Visibility typically 15-20 metres. Warm water, though occasional thermocline effects can bring cooler water from the channel.

The gentle profile makes this suitable for all certification levels and a good site for underwater photography — the turtles are relaxed and allow close approaches.

Sental is the turtle dive on Nusa Penida. If your group wants guaranteed turtle encounters, request this site. The turtles are accustomed to divers and won't swim away if you approach slowly and stay low.

The reef is worth exploring properly rather than just turtle-spotting. The bommies at 12-15 metres have good variety and the cleaning stations attract larger fish. Spend time watching the cleaning behaviour — it's one of the most fascinating interactions on the reef.

Good choice for first-time Nusa Penida visitors to acclimatise before Crystal Bay or the south coast sites. The conditions are representative of the north coast, and the current (or lack of it) helps nervous divers relax.

For photographers, the turtles at Sental provide the easiest turtle portrait opportunities on Nusa Penida. Calm water, cooperative subjects, good light.

Same access as other Nusa Penida sites — fast boat from Sanur, then dive boat along the north coast. Sental is about 10 minutes east of Toyapakeh. Usually included in multi-dive day trips.

Standard tropical setup. Camera with mid-range or wide-angle lens for turtle portraits. No special equipment needed. Easy, relaxed diving.

All Nusa Penida operators include Sental in their rotation. Blue Corner Dive, Penida Divers, Crystal Divers.

Not a standard liveaboard site.
