Padang Bai Blue Lagoon Dive Site
Bali, Indonesia · Near Padang Bai
Overview
Blue Lagoon is a small bay just east of Padang Bai harbour, one of the most popular easy dive sites on Bali's east coast. A shallow reef slopes gently to about 15 metres, with a sandy bottom and scattered coral bommies that create a sheltered, easy environment for divers of all levels.
Padang Bai is the ferry port town for boats to Nusa Penida, Lombok, and the Gili Islands. Most divers pass through without stopping, which is a shame — the Blue Lagoon and nearby Jepun sites offer relaxed diving with surprisingly good marine life for sites so close to a busy harbour.
The site is a favourite for Open Water courses, introductory dives, and macro photography. The bay is sheltered enough to dive year-round, and the consistent conditions make it a reliable training ground.
Marine Life at Padang Bai Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon's claim to fame is its critter life. Leaf scorpionfish are common on the coral bommies, sometimes several on a single dive. Reef octopus, cuttlefish, and blue-ringed octopus are found on the rubble and sandy areas. Moray eels — both green and snowflake — peer from coral holes.
Schools of fusiliers and snappers pass over the reef. Cleaner shrimp stations attract groupers and sweetlips. The sandy areas between bommies hold garden eels, blue-spotted stingrays, and occasionally ribbon eels. Anemone colonies with multiple clownfish species add colour.
Night dives are rewarding with hunting lionfish, free-swimming morays, Spanish dancers, and the usual cast of nocturnal critters.
Dive Conditions
Sheltered bay, no current, gentle slope. Shore entry from the beach is possible, or boat entry for a 2-minute ride. Conditions are as easy as diving gets in Bali. Visibility is typically 10-15 metres, occasionally 20 metres. The shallow maximum depth means long bottom times and easy air management.
The only downside is proximity to the ferry harbour. Boats and the occasional ferry can create surface conditions that require awareness during entry and exit.
⚓ Divemaster Notes
Blue Lagoon is better than its reputation. It gets dismissed as a training site, which means experienced divers miss some genuinely good critter hunting. The leaf scorpionfish density here is as good as anywhere in Bali.
For the best experience, go early before the Open Water classes arrive. The site is much more enjoyable with fewer divers disturbing the sand and scaring the critters.
Combine with Jepun (the reef on the other side of the headland) for a two-dive morning. Jepun has slightly more current and better soft coral coverage. The two sites together give a full morning's diving within walking distance of the harbour.
Padang Bai is also the cheapest diving on Bali — operators here charge significantly less than south Bali or Tulamben. Good for budget-conscious divers or those wanting to rack up dives without spending heavily.
How to Get to Padang Bai Blue Lagoon
Padang Bai is on Bali's east coast, approximately 1.5 hours from the airport and 1 hour from Ubud. The town is small and walkable. Blue Lagoon is a 5-minute walk from the main harbour.
Padang Bai has basic but adequate accommodation and a handful of dive operators. It's a convenient base for diving the east coast sites and catching fast boats to the islands.
Gear Recommendations
Macro lens for critter photography. Torch for looking in holes even on day dives. Standard 3mm suit. Nothing special needed. This is a gear-light site.
Recommended Dive Operators
Water Worx, OK Divers, and Bali Dive Trek are established Padang Bai operators. Small operations with good local knowledge. Prices are the lowest in Bali for guided dives.
Liveaboard Options
Not a liveaboard destination. Padang Bai is a departure point for some Nusa Penida and Lombok liveaboard itineraries.
