Shallow coral garden with diverse hard coral formations and reef fish in clear tropical water, typical of Tulamben's sheltered reef areas

Tulamben Coral Garden Dive Site

Bali, Indonesia · Near Tulamben

Reef Beginner 3–15m None Year-round

The Coral Garden is the shallow reef west of the USAT Liberty wreck, offering a gentle dive perfect for beginners, Open Water students, and snorkellers. It sits on a black volcanic sand slope with scattered coral bommies that attract a surprising amount of marine life for such a shallow, easy site.

This is Tulamben's warm-up dive, and it deserves more respect than it gets. While experienced divers rush past to the wreck or drop-off, the Coral Garden quietly hosts some of Tulamben's best macro critters in accessible conditions. It's also the go-to site for night dives when divers want a mellow experience.

Maximum depth is around 15 metres, with the best life concentrated between 5 and 10 metres. No current, no challenges. Just nice, easy diving.

The black sand is home to a fantastic array of critters. Mimic octopus, wonderpus, blue-ringed octopus, various frogfish, and seahorses are all found here. The coral bommies attract schools of garden eels on the sand, colonies of anemonefish, and hunting lionfish.

Night dives reveal bobbit worms in the sand, hunting bobcat catfish, stargazers, free-swimming moray eels, and the bioluminescent plankton that Tulamben is known for. The sandy habitat makes this one of the best muck diving sites in Bali.

It's not going to compare to Lembeh Strait for muck diving volume, but for a site that most people skip, the Coral Garden consistently delivers surprises.

As easy as it gets. Shore entry over pebbles, gentle slope to maximum 15 metres, no current, good visibility most days. This is where Tulamben dive centres bring their Open Water students and it's the default night dive site.

The only consideration is the pebble entry, which is the same challenge as the rest of Tulamben's shore dives. Use the porters.

Don't skip this site because it looks too easy. The muck critters here rival the Liberty wreck for photo opportunities, with far fewer divers competing for subjects.

For macro, work the sand between the bommies slowly. Mimic octopus are here but they're shy and fast — look for small holes in the sand with a ring of shell fragments around the entrance. Blue-ringed octopus are occasionally found in coconut shells.

The night dive here is exceptional and far easier than night diving the wreck. The sand critters come out in force after dark, and the bioluminescence is best experienced in open water between bommies. Turn off your torch for a few seconds and wave your hands.

Perfect for a third dive of the day when you've done the wreck and drop-off and still want more.

Same as all Tulamben sites — northeast Bali, 2.5-3 hours from the airport. Entry point is just west of the USAT Liberty wreck car park. Walking distance from all Tulamben accommodation.

Macro lens is the move here. Torch essential even on day dives for spotting critters in holes. Standard 3mm suit. Nothing special needed — the whole point is that it's easy.

All Tulamben operators dive this site. It's often included as part of a multi-dive package with the Liberty wreck.

Not a liveaboard site.
